In the jungles and hills of eastern Burma near the Thailand border, decades of civil strife and armed conflict between the central government and ethnic minority groups have frozen basic services and displaced an estimated 2 to 3 million people.

"Back pack health workers," trained by the IRC and based in Thailand, disappear on foot into the jungle for months at a time to provide primary health care and medicines to roughly 150,000 displaced people inside Burma's war-torn states.

Writer and photographer Patricia Gallinek documented their efforts and those of IRC health workers assisting Burmese refugees on Thai side of the border in a recent photo essay.
