Brutal conflicts in Congo, Uganda and Sudan are the world's three biggest "forgotten emergencies," each dwarfing the toll of the Asian tsunami but attracting scant media interest, according to a new Reuters AlertNet poll of experts.

In northern Uganda, 95% of the population in the conflict zone have been uprooted and more than 25,000 children have been abducted to serve as soldiers and sex slaves. IRC-UK's East Africa program officer George Graham, who took part in the poll, said more coverage of the war could highlight it as a test case for an international criminal court: "Greater media engagement could have a really positive effect. At the very least, the presence of journalists provides some comfort to people caught up in a crisis."
